Two-Day Woodfire Making Workshop for Montsalvat's New Anagama Kiln

Immerse yourself in the art of woodfiring and create your finest ceramic pieces for Montsalvat’s new anagama kiln! Guided by Sergei, this hands-on two-day workshop will equip you with essential skills in making and packing for a woodfiring. Your top 5 pieces will be included in the firing!

What’s Included:
- Your best 5 pieces fired for free in Anagama. Fees of $45/kg apply for extra 5 pieces maximum payable via QR code in studio.
- Complimentary 10kg of stoneware clay
- Woodfiring slips and access to studio tools
- Additional clay available for purchase via QR code in the studio

Workshop Schedule:

Saturday Morning:
- A slide show presentation exploring:
- The history and evolution of anagama kilns
- Visual examples of woodfired works for inspiration
- Techniques and strategies for achieving unique textures and effects in woodfired ceramics
- Introduction to clay types: how to source and identify suitable woodfiring clay bodies
- Hands-on techniques: throwing, altering forms, kurinuki, coiling & throwing
- Making pots for woodfiring: understanding packing, spacing, wadding, and flame path dynamics
- Kiln safety and OH&S: tips for protecting your health and well being during woodfirings

Saturday Afternoon:
- Studio time for students to begin creating their pieces (until 4 PM)

Sunday Morning:
- Continued studio work to finalise your creations

Sunday Afternoon:
- Demonstrations: applying slips and exploring slipping techniques
- Preparing wadding for the firing
- Signing and finishing: marking your pieces and placing them on the bisque cart for firing

This workshop is a unique opportunity to hone your skills, contribute to Montsalvat’s new kiln project, and deepen your understanding of woodfired ceramics.

Please note: The woodfiring will take place soon after workshop weather depending and will be confirmed at the workshop. Most likely firing will happen on March 14-16 - to be confirmed. All students from this workshop are encouraged to attend and participate in a roster to help fire the kiln. No extra charges to fire the kiln. However food and beverages will not be included.
